چکیده

The correlation between malathion resistance and fecundity was investigated in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Previous studies have shown that insecticide resistance is negatively correlated with reproductive components in insects. To investigate this relationship, the fecundity (egg production) was determined in 2 natural and 2 esterase 6 (Est-6) marker populations (4016 and 4211) and malathion resistance levels (LC50) were determined in the 4 populations of D. melanogaster. The resistance levels and Est-6 allozyme frequencies were compared to the results of 2 natural populations from Turkey (Antakya-Centre and Antalya-Serik) estimated in previous studies. In addition, malathion resistance levels (LC50) were determined in 2 mutant populations using the paper contact method and the results were tested with Finney’s probit analysis. In the bioassays, 4016 marker stock was more susceptible than the Antakya population and 4211 was more susceptible than the Serik population. The daily mean egg production numbers of females were calculated and compared using variance analysis (P < 0.05). The most productive population was found to be Antakya, followed by 4016, Serik, and 4211 populations, in decreasing order. These results indicate that malathion resistance is positively correlated with fecundity of 2 natural and 2 Est-6 marker stocks of D. melanogaster.

Genotype-by-Environment Interactions and Adaptation to Local Temperature Affect Immunity and Fecundity in Drosophila melanogaster

Natural populations of most organisms harbor substantial genetic variation for resistance to infection. The continued existence of such variation is unexpected under simple evolutionary models that either posit direct and continuous natural selection on the immune system or an evolved life history "balance" between immunity and other fitness traits in a constant environment. However, both local...

Long-term Laboratory Evolution of a Genetic Life-history Trade-off in Drosophila Melanogaster. 2. Stability of Genetic Correlations.

Experiments in laboratory populations of Drosophila melanogaster have shown a negative genetic correlation between early-life fecundity on the one hand and starvation resistance and longevity on the other. Selection for late-life reproductive success resulted in long-lived populations that had increased starvation resistance but diminished early-life fecundity relative to short-lived controls. ...

Geographic variation in diapause incidence, life-history traits, and climatic adaptation in Drosophila melanogaster.

In Drosophila melanogaster, exposure of females to low temperature and shortened photoperiod can induce the expression of reproductive quiescence or diapause. Diapause expression is highly variable within and among natural populations and has significant effects on life-history profiles, including patterns of longevity, fecundity, and stress resistance. We hypothesized that if diapause expressi...

Multiple Genetic Mechanisms for the Evolution of Senescence in Drosophila Melanogaster.

We present the results of selection experiments designed to distinguish between antagonistic pleiotropy and mutation accumulation, two mechanisms for the evolution of senescence. Reverse selection for early-life fitness was applied to laboratory populations of Drosophila melanogaster that had been previously selected for late-life fitness. These populations also exhibited reduced early-age fema...

Malathion Resistance in Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

Malathion resistance developed in a Drosophila melanogaster population that has been exposed to malathion for almost 20 years. Genetic analyses showed that malathion resistance in this population is under control of several genes that are located on the first, second and third chromosome. The second chromosome contributes the most to resistance; the factor(s) involved may be (partly) dominant o...
